ASLF Celebrates its 500th Mammogram Given at UIMCC

A Silver Lining Foundation recently celebrated a milestone-- the 500th ASLF-funded mammogram given at The University of Illinois Medical Center at Chicago (UIMCC). Chicago resident Charlene Dodson was the lucky recipient on Friday, November 21 at UIMCC.

ASLF provides no cost screening mammograms, follow-up diagnostic testing, and other breast cancer resources to uninsured and underinsured patients. The foundation's Buy A Mom A Mammogram program funds screening mammograms at area hospitals to qualifying women in a timely, dignified and respectful manner.

"We celebrate this incredible milestone in honor of women like Charlene Dodson, who have benefited from our resources, and always have our unconditional support," said Dr. Sandy Goldberg, breast cancer survivor and ASLF founder. "We're fortunate to have our friends at UIMCC provide their time, and services for 500 mammograms (and counting)!"

And don't forget to celebrate the holidays with ASLF! Make sure your name is on Santa's list of "Nice" rather than "Naughty" by joining ASLF's Junior Board for the "Save the Girls Holiday Party" at Zella (1983 N. Clybourn Ave., Chicago; 773-549-2910) on Friday, December 5 at 8:30 p.m.

Dr. Sandy Visits "Adelante"

In case you missed it, our own Dr. Sandy Goldberg, accompanied by good friend Dr. Virginia Bishop, stopped by WGN's Adelante recently to discuss something near and dear to her heart: A Silver Lining Foundation (ASLF). More specifically, the ladies discussed ASLF's important mission and the recent health fair the organization co-hosted (along with Banco Popular) at Roberto Clemente High School in Chicago's Humboldt Park neighborhood.

The health fair pre-qualified women for no-cost screening mammograms, and provided families with no cost health screenings, educational information and outreach services, breakout sessions, and a “day spa” featuring complimentary manicures, chair massages, haircuts and skin care demonstrations.

It was truly a successful day--more than 400 people attended the health fair! ASLF proudly qualified more than 60 people for no cost screening mammograms.

Mammograms and Saturday Mornings - Oh my!

Nothing good to watch on Saturday Mornings? How about taking a break from the cartoons and checking in on issues that matter. This Saturday's edition of Adelante Chicago on Chicago's WGN - 9 will feature A Silver Lining Foundation's Dr. Sandy Goldberg and Northwestern University's Dr. Virginia Bishop, who also has a private practice in Pediatric and Adolescent Medicine.

Hosted by Lourdes Duarte, the doctors will discuss the raising awareness of the need for mammography and address areas of resistance to testing in Chicago’s Spanish speaking community. Be sure to check the show out, or set your Tivo's and DVRs for Saturday morning, October 18th at 6:30 a.m.

Although this half-hour show focuses on the Hispanic community, the information Dr. Sandy and Dr. Bishop will discuss is universal – going beyond heritage or ethnicity since breast cancer can affect family and friends, neighbors and people you have not yet met. Take the initiaitve and learn some facts from two women who work tirelessly to get the word out on fighting breast cancer.

Sometimes, taking the first step in preventing breast cancer and illness is as easy as visiting your local high school. On Saturday October 25, A Silver Lining Foundation will host their 3rd Community Health Fair at Roberto Clemente High School (1147 North Western Avenue, Chicago IL 60622).
Sponsored by Banco Popular, this popular community outreach event welcomes everyone. No cost testing of various types are available including pre-qualifying for no cost screening mammograms.
Sounds like a great day to take care of yourself!

A Sterling Event: An Astounding Success

Despite hard economic times, on October 4, 2008 the compassion and goodwill of 327 party-goers shone bright at the 4th Annual A Sterling Event.

This black-tie gala thrown in honor of A Silver Lining Foundation (ASLF), founded by Dr. Sandy Goldberg, was a resounding success in the fight against breast cancer.

Hosts NBC5’s Rob Elgas and Ginger Zee kept the night running smoothly
while singer Ron Hawking kept the audience entertained with his witty “Lady is a Champ” (reworded to the tune of “Lady is a Tramp”) dedicated to Dr. Sandy Goldberg.

There was much excitement, including many raffles offering prizes such as a trip to London, and a hilarious game of heads-or-tails involving hot pink glow-in-the-dark necklaces and willing party-goers.

Guests were treated to a thrilling live auction, run by Auctioneer David Goodman. Among the amazing auction items were a trip to Costa Rica and a trip to Los Angeles.

During ASLF’s Buy a Mom a MammogramTM auction, the room was filled with raised auction paddles in an effort to help under-insured and uninsured women receive mammograms and follow-up care. Overall, the money raised from this auction will obtain approximately 1,100 mammograms for women throughout the Chicagoland area.

Donna Thompson, RN, MS was honored as the 2008 Evy Award Recipient, while ASLF was honored to welcome five more hospitals to its growing list of hospital partners; The University of Illinois Medical Center at Chicago and Northwest Community Hospital are joined by Ingalls Memorial Hospital, Loyola University Health System, Sinai Health System, South Shore Hospital and Swedish Covenant Hospital.

A Sterling Event’s guests have much to celebrate. Not only has the evening raised double the amount of 2007’s A Sterling Event, but ASLF will surely raise even more via donations throughout the year for its programs against breast cancer.
Can there possibly be a more wonderful reason to celebrate?
Yes there is.

October 4 was named by Chicago’s Mayor Richard M. Daley, as A Silver Lining Foundation Day.

Cheers to Dr. Sandy Goldberg and A Silver Lining Foundation!
